A proper holomorphic map \(f\) between two bounded Reinhardt domains \(D_{1}\) and \(D_{2}\) in \(\mathbb{C}^{2}\) is called {elementary} if it is elementary algebraic, that is, it is of the form \(f(z,w)=(\operatorname{const}z^{a}w^{b}, \operatorname{const} z^{c}w^{d})\), where \(a,b,c,d\) are integers with \(ad - bc \neq 0\). In this paper, the authors determine all nonelementary proper holomorphic maps between Reinhardt domains in \(\mathbb{C}^{2}\), as well as the corresponding pairs of domains: they show that one of six possible scenarios has to take place. As a corollary the authors obtain that if there exists a proper holomorphic map between two bounded Reinhardt domains in \(\mathbb{C}^{2}\), then there also exists an elementary proper map between them.
