The author defines the notion of a natural \(d\)-th Abel map for a connected, reduced, projective curve \(X\) over an algebraically closed field \(k\) having at most nodes as singularities. If the curve \(X\) is the limit of a family of smooth curves, a \(d\)-th Abel map for \(X\) is essentially the limit of the Abel maps of the smooth curves of the family. The Abel map is called natural if it is independent of the family. The author defines the notion of essential connectivity \(\varepsilon(X)\) of a model curve \(X\) in terms of the combinatorial structure of the irreducible components of \(X\) and its nodes. Finally, it is proved that \(X\) admits a natural \(d\)-th Abel mp if and only if \(\varepsilon(X)> d\).
