In previous papers [the author and \textit{F. Coito}, Fract. Calc. Appl. Anal. 7, No. 4, 459--471 (2004; Zbl 1125.26011); the author, \textit{J. A. Tenreiro Machado} and \textit{J. Sa de Costa}, Vision, Image and Signal Processing 152, No. 6, 846--850 (2005)], the author and his coauthors have proposed approaches for a coherent basis of the fractional calculus, where it is assumed as a starting point the definitions of forward and backward fractional differences and their integral representations. In this paper definitions of fractional centered differences and derivatives are proposed, generalizing to real orders the existing ones valid for even and odd positive integer orders. For each one, suitable integral formulations are obtained. The computations of the involved integrals led to new generalizations of the Cauchy integral derivative. With this the referred integrals lead to the well known Riesz potential operators and their inverses that emerge as true fractional centered derivatives. In Section 2, the author reviews the previously published theory. The type 1 and type 2 centered differences and their integral representations are considered in Section 3. Centered derivative definitions similar to Grunwald-Letnikov and their integral representations obtained by generalizing the Riesz potentials and inverses are given in Section 4. The work concludes with some conclusions.
