The Cucker-Smale-Navier-Stokes system, consisting of the kinetic Cucker-Smale equations immersed in a viscous fluid, is a particle-fluid model proposed to describe the dynamics of numerous flocking particles. This extension of the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system has applications in, e.g., biotechnology, chemical engineering, and physics. The authors prove the global existence of weak solutions and the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for the initial data of arbitrary size in two space dimensions. It is worth noting that for the three-dimensional system (similarly to the Navier-Stokes) global strong solutions have been shown to exist for small data only, cf. [\textit{H.-O. Bae} et al., Nonlinearity 25, No. 4, 1155--1177 (2012; Zbl 1236.35117)].
