The author gives a simplified proof that \(Var\{u_ 0()\}\ll 1\) can be replaced by \(Sup\{u_ 0()\}\ll 1\) in Glimm's method for \(2\times 2\) systems of conservation laws, or whenever a coordinate system of Riemann invariants is present. The argument is somewhat simpler but in the same spirit as given by \textit{J. Glimm} in his celebrated paper of 1965 [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 18, 697-715 (1965; Zbl 0141.289)]. The author is interested in extending these methods so as to apply to coupled systems with an arbitrary number of equations. In particular, the arguments on decay in \(L^{\infty}\) and stability in \(L^ 1\) presented by the author [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 298, 43-82 (1986; Zbl 0618.65076) and ibid. 317, No.2, 673-685 (1990; Zbl 0703.35108)], apply to systems of conservation laws with an arbitrary number of equations, once this supnorm estimate is known for systems of arbitrary size.
