The full dual space of the quantum universal enveloping algebra \(U=U_ q(\mathfrak{sl}(2))\) is equipped with the weak *-topology. The coordinate ring \(\mathcal A(\text{SL}(2))\) of the algebraic quantum group \(\text{SL}_q(2)\) and the set \(\mathcal A[[\text{SL}_q(2)]]\) of formally analytic elements in the full dual space are constructed. The main theorem in this paper is that \(\mathcal A[[\text{SL}_q(2)]]\) is a direct sum of the spaces of relatively invariant elements in the full dual space with respect to the maximal compact subgroup. For Part II see Lett. Math. Phys. 19, No. 3, 195--204 (1990; Zbl 0704.17008).
