The authors investigated equations governing the plane vibrations of a moving threadline, taking into account the dependence of the tension T upon the time derivative of the mass of the string per unit length. Using variable transformations they wrote a hyperbolic associated system in a form amenable to solving. Some of these solutions were employed in studying the nonlinear propagation of asymptotic waves in the states so characterized. They showed that the leading term of the asymptotic expansion in the case of longitudinal waves is ruled by a modified Burgers equation belonging to the expanding family of the evolution equations. They also showed that transverse waves are not affected by the dissipative mechanisms involved in the basic governing system.
