Let \(A\) be a noetherian graded \(k\)-algebra generated by \(A_ 1\). Then the Hilbert series \(\sum_ n\dim_ k A_ nT^ n\) has the form \((h_ 0+h_ 1T+\dots+h_ sT^ s)/(1-T)^{\dim (A)}\), \(h_ i\) integers. The author proves some inequalities for the \(h_ i\)'s in case \(A\) is a CM- domain. Let \(P\) be a finite poset on \(x_ 1,\dots,x_ p\), ordered so that \(i<j\) if \(x_ i<x_ j\) in \(P\). Let \(w_ i(P)\) be the number of permutations \(\sigma\) of \(\{1,\dots,p\}\) such that (i) if \(x_{\sigma(r)}<x_{\sigma(s)}\) then \(r<s\); and (ii) \(\#\{r;\sigma(r)>\sigma(r+1)\}=i\). It is shown that the vector \((w_ 0,\dots,w_ s)\) equals the vector \((h_ 0,\dots,h_ s)\) for a naturally associated graded algebra. This is used to get inequalities for the \(w\)-vector of the poset.
