This work is concerned with a study of nonreal eigenvalues of the Sturm- Liouville equation (1) \(-y''+q(x)y=\lambda w(x)y\), \(y(a)=y(b)=0\) where \(w\) as a weight takes positive values as well as negative values in the sets of positive Lebesgue measure. The author proves that the ``nonreal'' eigenvalue problem for (1) is equivalent to a two-parameter eigenvalue problem for the operator \(\alpha K+\beta^ 2N\) where \(K,N\) are Hammerstein integral operators acting in the Krein space \(L^ 2_ w[a,b]\) with a cone and \(K\) is linear compact but \(N\) is nonlinear noncompact. A general (open) question about the study of the last problem is stated. Reviewer's notes: For \(\alpha K+\beta^ 2N\) recent results of many authors on several parameter eigenvalue problems for noncompact vector fields will be applicable [see the references e.g. in the books of \textit{K. Deimling} [Nonlinear functional analysis (1985; Zbl 0559.47040)] or \textit{E. Zeidler} [Nonlinear functional analysis and its applications. Part I (1986; Zbl 0583.47050), Part II/A (1990; Zbl 0684.47028), Part II/B (1990; Zbl 0684.47029), Part III (1985; Zbl 0583.47051), Part IV (1988; Zbl 0648.47036)].
