The two dimensions occurring in the title of the paper can be defined for finite dimensional \(*\)-representations of \(*\)-Hopf algebras. Intrinsic dimension is defined on irreducible representations by using an intrinsic trace or the solutions of certain `conjugate equations'. The \(q\)-dimension is defined in this paper by choosing a `modular' element, which is positive and invertible, and then computing its trace under the representation. The two dimensions are shown to be equal in certain cases, including unitary representations of compact quantum groups.
