It is known that for an integer \(r\geq 2\) and \(b\in(0,1)\) with \(r \cdot b\geq 1\) there exists an automorphism \((\mathbb{Z}\)-action) of a Lebesgue space with a simple spectrum and with rank \(r\) and covering number \(b\) and \(\forall (m,r)\), \(2\leq m\leq r\leq\infty\), \(m,r\in\mathbb{N}\), there exists an automorphism having spectral multiplicity \(m\) and rank \(r\). The main purpose of the paper is to extend these results for arbitrary \(\mathbb{Z}^d\)-actions, \(d\geq 2\). It turned out to be enough to consider only the case \(d=2\). In this case an operator of topological symbolic \(\mathbb{Z}\)-actions, called a Kronecker sum, is introduced. For a measure-theoretical \(\mathbb{Z}^2\)-action \(\Phi\), the rank \(r(\Phi)\) of \(\Phi\), as the smallest natural number \(r\) satisfying some conditions based on Rokhlin \(\Phi\)-towers, is defined. With the help of a sequence of towers satisfying some properties, the covering number \(F^* (\Phi)\) of \(\Phi\) is defined. The main result of the paper says that if there are two symbolic \(\mathbb{Z}\)-actions, one of which is a strictly ergodic symbolic action \(T\) with state space a finite abelian group and the other is the Chacon action \(S\), then the rank and covering number of their Kronecker sum are the same as the corresponding rank and covering number of \(T\). Using this result, for a given \(r\geq 2\), \(b\in (0,1)\) with \(r\cdot b\geq 1\), a \(\mathbb{Z}^d\)-action with \(r(\Phi)=r\), \(F^*(\Phi)=b\) and a simple spectrum, is constructed. Also \(\forall m\), \(r\in\mathbb{N}\), \(1\leq m\leq r\leq\infty\) the authors construct a \(\mathbb{Z}\)-action with rank \(r\) and spectral multiplicity \(m\).
