In a recent paper, \textit{É. Fouvry} et al. [Comment. Math. Helv. 89, No. 4, 979--1014 (2014; Zbl 1306.11079)] proved that the classical divisor function and the Fourier coefficients of classical holomorphic cusp forms satisfy a central limit theorem concerning the distribution in nonzero residue classes modulo a large prime number. This paper provides an extension of that result to the case of Maass forms. Given an integer \(N \geq 2\), the authors prove that the multiple divisor functions of integers in invertible residue classes modulo a prime number and the Fourier coefficients of \(\mathrm{GL(N)}\) Maass cusp forms satisfy a central limit theorem in a suitable range. Such a universal Gaussian behaviour relies on an equidistribution result of products of hyper-Kloosterman sums.
