Two major areas of algebra, representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras and noncommutative algebraic geometry, historically started in very different aspects. Recently, there come out results that suggest strong connections between these two areas. For example, the first author of this paper defined and studied Fano algebras (representation theoretic objects) by noncommutative algebraic geometric method [Ampleness of two-sided tilting complexes, preprint]. In this paper, the authors study the noncommutative algebraic geometric objects, ``AS-Gorenstein (regular) algebras'', and determine their structure. One of the main results is the following: After generalizing the notion of AS-Gorenstein algebra, they show that symmetric AS-regular algebras of Gorenstein parameter 1 are exactly preprojective algebras of quasi-Fano algebras. This result shows the importance of studying AS-regular algebras in representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras (cf. Corollary 4.23). All in all, the paper gives the objects and methods for interactive study of classification problems in noncommutative algebraic geometry and those in representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras.
