The main result of this paper is the following theorem: Theorem. Let \(U\) be an algebra and \(\Gamma\) a commutative finitely generated subalgebra with the property that for any \(u\in U\) the \(\Gamma\)-bimodule \(\Gamma u\Gamma\) is finitely generated both as a left and as a right \(\Gamma\)-module. Then for any \(i\) the \(\Gamma\)-torsion theory associated to the subset of prime ideals of \(\Gamma\) of coheight at most \(i\) is liftable to \(U\). Furthermore, for any simple \(U\)-module \(M\) all associated prime ideals of \(M\) in \(\mathrm{Spec\,}\Gamma\) have the same coheight. This theorem provides a stratification of the category of \(U\)-modules with respect to the associated prime ideals in \(\Gamma\). The authors also obtain some results on annihilators of elements in \(U\)-modules generated by an element having a prime \(\Gamma\)-annihilator and apply these results to generalize Gelfand-Zetlin modules for \(\mathfrak{gl}_n\).
