Let \({\mathcal T}_H\) be the \(C^*\)-algebra generated by the Toeplitz operators with piecewise continuous symbols on the Hardy space and \({\mathcal T}_B\) be the \(C^*\)-algebra generated by the Toeplitz operators with piecewise continuous symbols on the Bergman space. It is known that both algebras have the same Fredholm symbol algebra and the symbol homomorphism is generated by the same mapping, although the generators of the algebras are not unitarily equivalent modulo compact operators. The paper answers the following interesting question: why is this so and what is a deep reason for such a phenomenon? It is shown that the algebras \({\mathcal T}_H\) and \({\mathcal T}_B\) are unitarily equivalent; the initial generators of either one of these algebras are unitarily equivalent to certain elements of the other algebra. Further, the symbol homomorphisms differ on the parametrization of the segment \([0,1]\). The explicit connection between the parametrizations is also given. Editorial remark: This article is an erroneous reprint of [ibid. 23, No. 3, 556--570 (2012; Zbl 1252.47086)].
