The author studies Kerr-Schild type perturbations with a non-null perturbation vector in the vacuum case. From the perturbation equations and examples it is seen that in order for a metric \({\overline g}_{\alpha\beta}= g_{\alpha\beta} + A\, v_\alpha v_\beta\) to be a solution of the full non-linear vacuum Einstein equations, the linearized equations are not sufficient. This is in contrast with the case of null rank 1 vacuum perturbations and makes the search for new solutions through this method difficult. The author concentrates on the constraints put on the perturbation direction by the perturbation equations and finds that they could be interpreted in terms of the geometry of the orthogonal 3-space. Using the linearized vacuum perturbation equations, new metrics tangent to the Schwarzschild metric are obtained, and a static Petrov type D anisotropic perfect fluid and a spherically symmetric Petrov type D anisotropic perfect fluid are found.
