There is a canonical way of extending a semigroup operation * on a discrete space S to a semigroup operation on the Stone-Čech compactification \(\beta\) S with the property that \(y\mapsto x*y\) is continuous for each \(x\in \beta S\). This paper is concerned with the situation in which S has two semigroup operations, \(+\) and., related by the distributive law \((a+b).c=a.c+b.c\). The compact semigroup \((\beta S,+)\) has a minimal two-sided ideal M. The principal theorem asserts that its closure, cl M, is a right ideal in (\(\beta\) S,.) under the condition that, for each \(x\in S\), S.x is syndetic (that is, there is a finite subset F of S, depending on x, such that for all \(y\in S\), \((y+F)\cap S.x\neq \emptyset)\). This theorem generalizes a result known for \({\mathbb{N}}\).
