The boundedness of the maximal operator \(\sigma^*\) is intimately connected to the a.~e. convergence of the Walsh-Fejér means \(\sigma_nf\). In particular, the weak type \((1,1)\) property of \(\sigma^*\) as shown in \textit{F.~Schipp} [Mat. Zametki 18, 193--201 (1975; Zbl 0349.42013)] implies boundedness of \(\sigma^*\) from \(L_p\) to \(L_p\) for \(p>1\). In the limiting case \textit{N.~Fujii} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc.~77, 111--116 (1979; Zbl 0415.43014)] proved that \(\sigma^*\) is bounded from dyadic \(H_1\) to \(L_1\). For smaller exponents \(p\), \textit{F.~Weisz} [Anal. Math. 22, No. 3, 229--242 (1996; Zbl 0866.42020)] showed the boundedness from martingale \(H_p(G)\) to \(L_p(G)\) for \(p>1/2\). In fact, for \(p=1/2\) the boundedness turns out to be false as was shown by \textit{P.~Simon} [Monatsh. Math. 131, No. 4, 321--334 (2001; Zbl 0976.42014)]. However, the weaker statement that \(\sigma^*\) is bounded from \(H_{1/2}(G)\) to weak-\(L_{1/2}(G)\) was shown by \textit{F.~Weisz} [Acta Math. Hung. 103, No. 1--2, 139--176 (2004; Zbl 1060.42021)]. The same program as above can be carried out for the two-dimensional Walsh-Fourier series, where the author has made significant contributions [East J. Approx. 12(3), 295--302 (2006)]. In this paper it is shown, that the maximal operator of the Marcinkiewicz-Fejér means of the double Walsh-Fourier series is bounded from the dyadic Hardy space \(H_{2/3}(G\times G)\) to weak-\(L_{2/3}(G\times G)\). This provides the missing piece for the limiting case. For higher dimensions \(d\) a similar behavior for the limiting exponent \(p=d/(d+1)\) is conjectured.
