An improvement of the method for synthesis of linear control systems with desired equivalent form [see \textit{M. M. Konstantinov}, \textit{P. Kh. Petkov} and the reviewer, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 6, 27-359 (1980; Zbl 0439.93020)] is developed for the ''deadbeat'' case, i.e. when the closed- loop system matrix has zero spectrum. As in the original method, the first step is the transformation of the system into orthogonal (quasi) canonical form. Then the gain matrix is obtained solving a sequence of least-squares problems which ensures a minimal norm solution. Although the method is not proved to be numerically stable, it seems that it has very good numerical properties.
