Let \(G\) be the infinite dimensional Grassmann algebra over a field \(F\) of characteristic zero and let \(UT_2\) be the algebra of \(2\times 2\) upper triangular matrices over \(F\). By a result of Kemer these two algebras generate the only varieties of almost polynomial growth, i.e., their codimension sequences grow exponentially but the codimension sequence of any proper subvariety grows polynomially. According to the author of the paper under review, she gives, up to PI-equivalence, a complete list of associative algebras \(A\) which generate the subvarieties of \(\text{var}(G)\) and \(\text{var}(UT_2)\). Reviewer's remark: One of the steps of the proof of Lemma 4.1 contains an inaccuracy which reflects to the statement of Corollary 4.1. As a result, the list of algebras generating the subvarieties of \(\text{var}(G)\) and \(\text{var}(UT_2)\) is not complete. Nevertheless, the paper contains interesting facts about concrete algebras satisfying the polynomial identities of \(G\) and \(UT_2\). A complete description of the subvarieties of \(\text{var}(G)\) in another language is presented in [\textit{L. A. Vladimirova, V. S. Drensky}, PLISKA, Stud. Math. Bulg. 8, 144-157 (1986; Zbl 0664.16015)]. Translated in the language of the present paper it gives that every proper subvariety of \(\text{var}(G)\) is generated by the direct sum of the Grassmann algebra of a vector space of finite even dimension and a nilpotent algebra. Information about subvarieties of \(\text{var}(UT_2)\) is contained in [\textit{L. A. Vladimirova}, Serdica 14, No. 1, 82-94 (1988; Zbl 0665.16014)].
