    Let P and Q be two positive (local) Kato functions on a Riemann surface R (or a subregion R of \({\mathbb{R}}^ d\), \(d\geq 2)\) such that the operators \(\Delta\)-P and \(\Delta\)-Q admit global Green functions \(G_ P\) and \(G_ Q\) on R. By definition P rules Q if there exists a covering \(\{V_ j\}\) of R by disks (open balls) and associated decompositions \(\{P_ j\}\) and \(\{Q_ j\}\) of P and Q respectively such that \[ \sum_{j\in {\mathbb{N}}}(1/\inf_{z\in V_ j}G_ P(a,z))\sup_{z\in V_ j}\int G_ P(z,\zeta) | P_ j(\zeta)Q_ j(\zeta)| dm(\zeta)<\infty \] (a\(\in R\) reference point, m local Lebesgue measure). For example, P rules Q if \(P=Q\) outside a compact set. It is shown that the Martin compactifications \(R^*_ p\) and \(R^*_ Q\) are canonically homeomorphic if P rules Q. In particular, given a Kato function P and taking \(\rho_{\epsilon}(z)=A\epsilon^{-d} \exp (-1/(1-| z/\epsilon |^ 2),\) the Martin compactifications \(R^*_ P\) and \(R^*_{\rho_{\epsilon}*P}\) are canonically homeomorphic if \(\epsilon >0\) is sufficiently small.
