The formalism of biset functors for finite groups, introduced by Bouc, yields a unified treatment for operations of induction, restriction, inflation, deflation and transport by group isomorphisms, which appear in various areas of group representation theory. The author constructs the algebra realizing biset functors as representations. The algebra has a presentation similar to the well-known Mackey algebra. Two new constructions of simple biset functors are performed by adapting some natural constructions from the context of Mackey functors. Moreover a generalization of the mark homomorphism to biset functors is considered, and a criterion for semisimplicity in terms of this version of the mark homomorphism is obtained.
