A Riemannian manifold is called \textit{secure} (resp. \textit{totally insecure}) if for any pair of points (resp. for no pair of points) the geodesics between these points can be blocked by a finite number of point obstacles. It is an open conjecture that a compact Riemannian manifold is secure if and only if it is flat. In the paper this conjecture is shown for surfaces of positive genus. In addition the authors show that a closed Riemannian surface of genus at least two is totally insecure.
