It was shown by \textit{G. Horrocks} [Topology 7, 117-120 (1968; Zbl 0162.273)], by \textit{M. F. Atiyah} and \textit{E. Rees} [Invent. Math. 35, 131-153 (1976; Zbl 0332.32020)] and by \textit{Vogelaar} (Thesis, Leiden 1978) that any topological vector bundle on \({\mathbb{P}}_ 3\) has an algebraic structure. Here the same question is considered in the more general case of a homogeneous rational 3-fold. In [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 97, 279-288 (1985; Zbl 0564.32018)] the first author and \textit{M. Putinar} proved that any topological rank 2 bundle on such a 3-fold is algebraic. In the paper in question the following theorem is proved: Any rank 3 topological vector bundle on a homogeneous rational 3-fold X admits an algebraic structure. It is an easy consequence of both results that a topological vector bundle of arbitrary rank admits an algebraic structure. The method of proof is as follows: It is well known that the only homogeneous rational 3-folds are \({\mathbb{P}}_ 3\), the quadric 3-fold in \({\mathbb{P}}_ 4\), the flag manifold \({\mathbb{F}}_{(1,2)}\), \({\mathbb{P}}_ 2\times {\mathbb{P}}_ 1\) and \({\mathbb{P}}_ 1\times {\mathbb{P}}_ 1\times {\mathbb{P}}_ 1\) and for each case a separate proof is given. By the above mentioned paper of Bănică and Putinar one knows that \(c_ 1,c_ 2\) and \(c_ 3\) are the Chern classes of a topological complex vector bundle of rank 3 on X if and only if \((c_ 1+c_ 1(X))c_ 2\equiv c_ 3 mod 2.\) Taking appropriate systems of disjoint rational curves in \({\mathbb{P}}_ 3\) and applying Serre's method [\textit{J.-P. Serre}, Algèbre et Théorie des Nombres, Sémin. Dubreil-Dubreil-Jacotin-Pisot (1960/61), Exposé 2 (1963; Zbl 0132.413)] or Ferrand's method [\textit{D. Ferrand}, C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. A 281, 345-347 (1975; Zbl 0315.14019)] an algebraic rank 2 vector bundle is constructed and then using this and applying Vogelaar's method (Thesis) one gets the bundles of rank 2 on X. The proof that all possible triples of Chern classes can actually be realized involves number theoretical arguments. The paper also contains a construction of rank 3 vector bundles on 3-folds using extensions of ideals by rank-2 reflexive sheaves.
