It is still an open problem whether sums and products of two commuting Banach space operators both decomposable in the sense of C. Foiaş are decomposable again. We prove a result which shows that \(S+T\), \(S\cdot T\), more generally all analytic functions in the pair (S,T), are decomposable, if S,T are decomposable Banach space operators such that S restricted to and modulo the spectral subspaces of T is decomposable. Instead of sums and products of two commuting single operators we study systems (S,T) composed of two mutually commuting m-respectively n-tuples S,T of commuting Banach space operators. Applying the main duality result of \textit{J. Eschmeier} and \textit{M. Putinar}, J. Reine Angew. Math. 354, 150-163 (1984; Zbl 0539.47002)] we show that (S,T) has the local decomposition property, if S,T and \(S| X_ T(Q)\), \(S/X_ T({\mathbb{C}}^ n\setminus Q)\) have the local decomposition property for all open polydiscs Q in \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\). An example in the negative direction is given of two commuting decomposable Hilbert space operators S,T such that the composed system does not even posses the single valued extension property. On the other hand, the following application of the above described positive criterium is given. Let A be a Banach algebra with bounded approximate identity and X a Banach-A-module. If \(T_ 1,...,T_ n\) are decomposable multipliers on A and S is a commuting m-tuple of continuous A-module homomorphisms on X, which has the local decomposition property, then the composed system \((S,\tilde T)\in L(X)^{m+n}\), where \(\tilde T\) denotes the system induced by \(T=(T_ 1,...,T_ n)\) on X, has the local decomposition property. Thus results of C. Apostol and E. Albrecht on decomposable multiplication operators respectively multipliers are unified and strengthened.
