For any space X and any closed \(A\subset X\), let \({\mathfrak U}(A;X)\) denote the set of all open neighbourhoods of A in X, partially ordered by inclusion. Theorem 1: Compacta A and B in \(X=s= countable\) infinite product of open intervals have the same shape iff \({\mathfrak U}(A;s)\) and \({\mathfrak U}(B;s)\) are isomorphic as partially ordered sets. (Analogues of this result also exist for other ambient spaces X, e.g. for \(X=Q= Hilbert\) cube, but involve restrictions concerning the embedding of A and B into X.) Theorem 2: There exists a category \(\Lambda\) of lattices with an intrinsic notion of homotopy such that the assignment \(Q\supset A\mapsto {\mathfrak U}(A;Q)\) extends to a contravariant full embedding of the strong shape category of compact Z-sets in Q into the homotopy category \(\Lambda_ h\) of \(\Lambda\).
