    Sharp inequalities are derived for certain (polynomial-like) functions of the real variables \(p_ i\) \((i=1(1)\sigma)\) by interpreting \(p_ i\) as the probabilities that various switches be thrown in certain directions. Parameters \(m_{\nu}\) in the inequalities are at first taken to be integers; later the inequalities are established when \(m_{\nu}\) are arbitrary real numbers. The side condition \(\sum p_ i=1\) occurs throughout analysis, so there are many corollaries. Examples of the inequalities established are \[ \sum^{\sigma}_{i=1}(1-p^ m_ i)^ m>k-1,\quad valid\quad if\quad m>1, \] \[ \sum^{r}_{j=0}\left( \begin{matrix} n\\ j\end{matrix} \right)p^{jm}(1-p^ m)^{m-j}+[1- \sum^{r}_{j=\quad 0}\left( \begin{matrix} n\\ j\end{matrix} \right)p^ j(1-p- s)^{n-j}]^ m>1+s^{\max [m,n]}, \] valid if \(m>1\), \(n>r+1\), \(0<p,s,p+s\leq 1\), and also valid if \(0<m<1\), \(0<n<r+1\), \[ (1-x)^ u+x^{1/u}<1,\quad if\quad <x<1,\quad u>1. \]
