Let \(\Sigma\) be a fan, or family of simplicial cones in \({\mathbb{R}}^ d\), spanned by (primitive) lattice points, which cuts out on the unit sphere a spherical complex \(\Sigma_ 0\). With \(\Sigma\) is associated a toric variety, and this is projective if and only if \(\Sigma_ 0\) is strongly polytopal, meaning that it is obtained by radial projection from the boundary complex of a convex polytope. \textit{G. C. Shephard} [Isr. J. Math. 9, 257-262 (1971; Zbl 0207.522)] has given a criterion for strong polytopality in terms of Gale transforms. The present author utilizes this criterion to construct various nonprojective toric varieties.
