Let \(P_ 1,...,P_ m\) be continuous linear projections onto the subspaces \(N_ 1,...,N_ m\) of a topological vector space X. Two natural questions arise: (a) Is \(N_ 1+...+N_ m\) closed? (b) Is \(N_ 1+...+N_ m\) complemented? To give an answer to (b) the author proved the theorem 2.8. He has used the result 2.8 in [\textit{L. Svensson}, On the closure of sums of closed subspaces, Research report, Royal Inst. of Technology Stockholm (1981)] in theoretical tomography concerning the closure of a finite sum of subspaces of \(L^ p\) consisting of functions constant on certain sets. The author extended this result for Hausdorff locally convex topological vector spaces. With the help of this theorem we can solve theorems about extensions of functions and existence theorems for certain partial differential equations. H. Lang answers (a) affirmatively in case X is a Fréchet space and all products \(P_ iP_ j\), \(i\neq j\) are compact which is a generalization of a result of L. Svensson (1981) for reflexive Banach spaces. Improving the result of \textit{H. Lang} [Applicable Analysis 18, 257-265 (1984; Zbl 0537.46004)] the author proved theorem 3.10 for Hilbert spaces and every product \(P_ iP_ jP_ k\) is compact for \(i\neq j\neq k\neq i.\) Of course these are two new results on this line and will help in solving many problems.
