Recently, \textit{H.-M. Wee} [Comput. Oper. Res. 22, No. 3, 345-356 (1995; Zbl 0827.90050)] considered an inventory model for deteriorating items with exponentially decreasing demand rates and shortages over a finite planning horizon. A heuristic based on equal replenishment periods was suggested for both complete and partial backlogging. The aim of this short note is threefold: (1) We show that optimal solutions for a more general models exist. (2) We show that under the assumptions of Wee, the optimal procedure is independently from the form of the demand rate. I assume complete backlogging. Partial backlogging can be handled in a similar fashion. (3) We show that the procedure suggested by Wee and generalized here leads indeed to the optimal replenishment schedule, a fact not contained in the previous articles of Wee or the author.
