Let \((x_ 1,...,x_{n+1})\) and \((y_ 1,...,y_{n+1})\) be two integral vectors such that \(x_ 1+...+x_{n+1}=y_ 1+...+y_{n+1}\) and \(y_ 1\geq y_ 2\geq...\geq y_{n+1}\). The author gives an explicit formula for the multiplicity \(\chi_ n(x,y)\) of the weight \((x_ 1,...,x_{n+1})\) in a finite-dimensional irreducible representation of the Lie algebra \(s\ell (n+1)\) with the highest weight \((y_ 1,...,y_{n+1})\); namely \(\chi_ n(x,y)=\sum Q_{\hat a}(x,y)\), where \(Q_{\hat a}\) is a certain polynomial (explicitly described in the paper) and the sum is taken over a certain (also explicitly described) subset of the set of the pairs \(\hat a=(a,s)\), a being a so-called admissible sequence of the set \(\{1,...,n+1\}\) and s being an element of the group \(S_{n+1}\).
