    Two problems are considered in this paper. If \(A = (a_{ij}) \subset M_ n(K)\), and \(\chi : S_ n \to K\), where \(K\) is a field, let \(d_ \chi\) denote the corresponding Schur function; that is \(d_ \chi (A) = \sum_{\sigma \in S_ n} \chi (\sigma) \prod^ n_{i = 1}a_{i \sigma (i)}\). Then the authors characterise the matrices \(A,B \in M_ n (K)\) such that \(d_ \chi (AXB) = d_ \chi (X)\). Furthermore, the semigroup of matrices \(A \in M_ n (K)\) such that \(d_ \chi (AX) = d_ \chi (XA)\) is considered. The authors claim that problems of this type arise in multilinear algebra but that they are now also of independent interest.
