For the general linear group \(\text{GL}_ n(\mathbb{C})\) the decomposition of the mixed tensor product \(V_ n^{(N,M)}= V_ n^{\otimes N} \otimes (V_ n^*)^{\otimes M}\) of the fundamental representation \(V_ n\) and its dual \(V_ n^*\) into a sum of irreducibles was given by Stembridge (1987) and Koike (1989). On the other hand, Jimbo showed that the centralizer algebra of the natural representation of the quantum algebra \(U_ q(\text{gl}(n, \mathbb{C}))\) on \(V_ n^{(0,N)}\) is isomorphic to the Iwahori-Hecke algebra if \(n\geq N\) and \(q\in \mathbb{C}\) is generic. In the present paper the authors introduce a generalization \(H^ n_{N,M} (q)\) of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type \(A\), which is defined by generators and relations. The main result says that the algebra \(H^ n_{N,M}(q)\) is semisimple and is isomorphic to the centralizer algebra \(C^{(N,M)}_ n (q)\) of the natural representation of \(U_ q (\text{gl} (n,\mathbb{C}))\) on \(V_ n^{(N,M)}\), if \(n\geq N+M\) and \(q\) is generic. (For \(n<N+M\) similarly to the case \(q=1\) the centralizer \(C^{(N,M)}_ n (q)\) is obtained from \(H^ n_{N,M}(q)\) after some additional factorization.) To prove the above fact, the authors construct all the irreducible representations of \(H^ n_{N,M}(q)\), using the Bratteli diagram of the inclusions \({\mathbb{C}}\subset H_ n^{1,0} (q)\subset H^ n_{2,0}(q) \subset\cdot \subset H^ n_{N,0}(q) \subset H^ n_{N,1}(q) \subset\cdot\subset H^ n_{N,M} (q)\). Markov traces on these algebras related to the HOMFLY link invariants are also described. The category of finite dimensional representations of the Hopf algebra \(U_ q (\text{gl} (n,\mathbb{C}))\) is the factorized category of ribbon tangles. The generators of the algebra \(H^ n_{N,M}(q)\) have a simple geometrical interpretation. In the reviewer's opinion this language would make the reading of the paper easier.
