    This textbook presents basic concepts of wavelet transforms and subband decompositions and shows some wavelet applications in signal and image processing. It is written for graduate students and researchers in electrical and computer engineering. The reader should be familiar with the basics of signal theory. This book is divided into 3 parts. The first part deals with the basic understanding of wavelets and subbands, which are closely related to wavelet packets. The second part includes advanced topics of windowed Fourier transforms, continuous wavelets, and discrete wavelets. In the last part, some applications of wavelets and subbands are sketched. This includes signal processing of ultrasonic signals, image compression, pattern recognition, and signal-to-noise improvement. The communication application concentrates on spread spectrum systems, which have applications to wireless communication and digital multitone. Unfortunately, this book contains numerous misprints and errors. Let me give some examples. Schauder is named ``Schander'' and ``Schaunder'' (pp. 2-4), Parseval is ``Parceval'' (p. 112), and Kronecker is ``Kroneger'' (p. 213). The authors distinguish between a function and its Fourier transform on p. 110 and p. 507, but not on p. 66. The essential relation for the filter coefficients of orthogonal scaling functions and wavelets is missing on p. 66. The filter coefficients of special wavelets are wrong on p. 68 and p. 86. The sum of all filter coefficients of a scaling function is equal to \(\sqrt 2\), but not 1 (p. 67). The definition of unitary matrices is wrong (p. 70). The matrices \(H_0\) and \(H_1\) are not Toeplitz matrices (p. 71). Biorthogonal wavelets are not correctly explained on p. 86. The plot of \(\cos(\omega t)\) is not correct on p. 105. The figure of the Haar wavelet on p. 250 contradicts its definition on p. 249. Further, the style of all formulas and many figures can be essentially improved.
