The authors consider the periodic Cauchy problem for the Camassa-Holm equation. This equation, introduced independently by Camassa and Holm and by Fachssteiner and Fokas, has some features in common with the KdV equation. The main result shows that, if the initial data are real analytic on the torus, then the solution is analytic, globally in space and locally in time. It was know that the Cauchy problem for the Camassa-Holm equation is not globally well-posed. The proof of the main theorem is based on a contraction type argument in a suitably chosen scale of Banach spaces which are also algebras. The authors transform the equation into a system, and prove certain estimates for the second member of the system which are related to the Banach space scales. This permits them to conclude by an abstract result due to \textit{M. S. Baouendi} and \textit{C. Goulaouic} [Commun. Partial Differ. Equations 2, 1151--1162 (1977; Zbl 0391.35006)].
