A special class of coupled nonlinear diffusion systems called ''\(\lambda\)- \(\omega\) reaction diffusion systems'' have been studied a lot in connection with the modeling of chemical waves and patterns. \textit{N. Kopell} and \textit{L. N. Howard} [Stud. Appl. Math. 64, 1-56 (1981; Zbl 0479.35052)] have identified a certain eigenvalue problem associated with outward-moving waves originating at the origin. In this paper, the authors specialize to particular kinds of functions \(\lambda\) and \(\omega\) and propose a method based on ''trial phase functions'' to determine the spectrum. This method is exploited by making three trial phase function constructions, leading to results which are apparently successively more accurate for a greater range of mode numbers. The results are compared with numerical results.
