The author completes the investigations of \textit{R. H. Escobales} [see J. Differ. Geom. 10, 253-276 (1975; Zbl 0301.53024), and ibid. 13, 93-107 (1978; Zbl 0406.53036)] on Riemannian submersions \(S^ n\to B\) and \({\mathbb{C}}P^ n\to B\) with connected and totally geodesic fibres. In the first case he shows that B has to be a symmetric space of rank one; in this way he obtains Escobales' classification again; in fact, he improves the results by showing that only standard projections can occur. For the second kind of submersions he proves that the canonical projections \({\mathbb{C}}P^{2n+1}\to {\mathbb{H}}P^ n\) are the only possibilities with complex fibres.
