One common strategy for selecting a moving mesh for a time-dependent partial differential equation is the equidistribution at each fixed time of a linear functional of the computed solution. In this paper a linear stability analysis is performed for several such equidistributed schemes, and the observed instabilities of some of them are explained. Furthermore, it is shown that the price of stability of the equidistribution scheme may be an increase of the stiffness of the system.
