Let \(r_ w(T)\) denote the radius of the essential spectrum \(\sigma_ w(T)\) of a bounded linear operator T in a complex Banach space. Meromorphic operators, i.e. those with \(r_ w(T)=0\), have been characterized by \textit{S. R. Caradus} [Can. J. Math. 19, 723-736 (1967; Zbl 0149.353)]: T is meromorphic iff \(\lim_{k\to \infty}(\pi (T^ k))^{1/k}=0\), where \(\pi (S)=\inf \{\| S-F\| | F(S-F)=0=(S- F)F\), \(F\in {\mathcal F}\}\) (\({\mathcal F}\) denotes the class of operators with rational resolvent). The author proves that the equality \(r_ w(T)=\lim_{k\to \infty}(\pi (T^ k))^{1/k}\) holds in general. He also gives estimations of \(r_ w(S+T)\), and \(r_ w(S\cdot T)\), and from this he deduces that the product of two commuting meromorphic operators is again meromorphic.
