The authors present a theoretical study of local elastodynamic stresses of woven fabric composites under dynamic loading. The authors focus on the unit cell of an orthogonal woven fabric composites composed of two sets of mutually orthogonal yarns of either the same fibers or different fibers in a matrix material. Using the mosaic model for simplifying woven fabric composites and a shear lag approach to account for inter-yarn deformation, the authors present a one-dimensional analysis to predict the local elastodynamics and elastostatic behavior. Initial and boundary value problems have been formulated and solved through the use of Laplace's transform. The authors obtain closed-form solutions for dynamic displacement and stresses in each yearn and for bond shearing stresses at the interface between adjacent varns in time domain for any type of in-plane impact loadings. It is shown that, when time tends to infinity, the solution reduces to the static loading case. As an example of the general analytical method, the authors investigate dynamic stresses and bond shearing stresses of plane wave composites subjected to a uniform impact step.
