A mathematical derivation of a posteriori estimates for the error and the error reduction corresponding to an \(h\)-\(p\)-refinement of elements for elliptic problems in one dimension is presented. The authors use the standard residual estimator for elliptic problems for the error estimation, and the error reduction is estimated by norms of the solutions of local problems. In one dimension the estimates are easily localized to single elements. Based on these a posteriori estimates an adaptive algorithm is derived. Numerical results obtained by the adaptive \(h\)-\(p\)-algorithm (simulations for the \(x^\alpha\) singularity, for problems with smooth solution, interior and boundary layers) are presented.
