Let \(E\longrightarrow X\) be a holomorphic vector bundle of rank \(r\) over a complex manifold \(X\) of dimension \(n\). In [Duke Math. J. 145, No. 2, 341--378 (2008; Zbl 1181.32025)], \textit{B. Berndtsson} and \textit{M. Păun} introduced a notion of singular Hermitian metric \(h\) on \(E\). Moreover, they called \(h\) Griffiths negative if \(\log\| u\|_h\) is plurisubharmonic for any local holomorphic section \(u\) of \(E\), and resp. Griffiths positive if the dual metric \(h^\star\) on \(E^\star\) is Griffiths negative. In [Ark. Mat. 53, No. 2, 359--382 (2015; Zbl 1345.32021)], \textit{H. Raufi} showed that the first Chern form \(c_1(E,h)\) of a singular Hermitian metric \(h\) on \(E\) curved as above can be defined as a positive or negative closed current of bidegree \((1,1)\) on \(X\). The paper under review studies further the properties of Griffiths negative or Griffiths positive singular Hermitian metrics. The authors find sufficient conditions for the higher Chern forms \(c_k(E,h)\), \(1\leq k\leq \min(r,n)\), to be well defined in the sense of currents. They prove that if the singular Hermitian metric \(h\) on \(E\) is Griffiths negative or Griffiths positive and is continuous and non-degenerate outside a subvariety \(V\subset X\) of codimension \(\geq k\), then \(c_k(E,h)\) can be defined as a current of order \(0\) and it has the expected properties. In particular, when \(X\) is compact they show that \(c_k(E,h)\) represents the \(k\)-th Chern class \(c_k(E)\) of \(E\).
