This paper studies the effect of longitudinal electric field components on the propagation of intense ultrashort optical pulses based on a generalized UPPE model. A set of beam equations is first introduced and then its solution of the electric field is represented in terms of amplitudes for left/right traveling waves and the longitudinal mode in the integral form. Asymptotic equations governing the effect of the longitudinal mode are derived in light of extra constraints on the amplitudes. In addition, the governing wave equation is also derived for the purely longitudinal mode. The solutions to the asymptotic equations are analyzed in the multiple scale approach and they demonstrate two intriguing phenomena in the weakly nonlinear, small bandwidth limit : filamentation instability and self-focusing collapse
