Background of the considerations is the mathematical description of vibrating nets (e.g. electric networks with selfinduction or systems of elastic strings). Solutions of such problems are often given in terms of \(t\mapsto e^{iA^{\sigma}t} \phi\), where A: D(A)\(\to H\) is a selfadjoint elliptic differential operator in some Hilbert space H of functions \(\phi\) on the net (e.g. \(\sigma =\) for ü(t)\(+Au(t)=0)\). \(C^{\infty}\)-solutions require special initial conditions: \[ (1)\quad \phi \in D(A^{\infty})\Leftrightarrow (2)\quad [t\mapsto e^{iA^{\sigma}t} \phi]\in C^{\infty}({\mathbb{R}},H), \] (cf. semi-group theory). In special cases (1) includes a scale of compatibility conditions imposed on \(\phi\in H\) in every node of the net, generalizing the usual \(C^{\infty}\)-notion in the case of two branches connected by a node. (2) is shown to be equivalent to \[ [t\mapsto \sum^{\infty}_{k=0}e^{ik t}[\phi_ k,\phi]\phi_ k]\in C^{\infty}({\mathbb{R}},H) \] where \(\{\phi_ k\}\) is an orthonormal base of eigenfunctions of A to the eigenvalues \(\lambda_ k\). To this purpose, \(\lambda_ k^{\sigma}\) must be replaced by k in the \(\{\phi_ k\}\)-representation of (2) and therefore the asymptotic behavior of the \(\lambda_ k\) is determined. These considerations are related to the work of G. Lumer and S. Nicaise (Mons) on diffusion problems on ramified spaces and to the research of B. Gramsch and K. G. Kalb (Mainz) on \(\psi\)-algebras and abstract \(C^{\infty}\)-notions. Further material and generalization to higher-dimensional interaction- problems is treated in the author's thesis ''Lokale and globale Lösungen linearer und nichtlinearer hyperbolischer Evolutionsgleichungen mit Transmission'' (Mainz, 1987).
