The authors study the existence of standing wave solutions \(\psi=e^-{iEt\over h}u(x)\) of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation \(ih\psi_t+{h^2\over 2m}\Delta\psi-W(x)\psi+| \psi| ^{p-1}\psi=0\), for critical energy \(E\). Here \(x\in \mathbb{R}^N\), \(p\in(1,{N+2\over N-2})\) for \(N\geq 3\), and \(p\in (1,\infty)\) for \(N=1,2\). A comparison with the work of previous authors is also made.
