Let G be a finite unitary reflection group acting on a complex vector space V of dimension \(\ell\), and \(\gamma\) : \(V\to V/G\) its orbit map. L is the set of intersections of reflecting hyperplanes of G in V, and \(L^ p\) the subset of p-dimensional elements of L. Further, let \(f_ 1,...,f_{\ell}\) be homogeneous basic invariants of G in the algebra of polynomials on V. By a well-known result of Chevalley, \(\tau\) : V/G\(\to \tilde V={\mathbb{C}}^{\ell}\), \(\tau (v)=(f_ 1(v),...,f_{\ell}(v))\), is a bijection. \(\tilde N^ p=\cup \{\tau \gamma X:\) \(X\in L^ p\}\) is the p-component of the orbit stratification determined by L in \(\tilde V.\) The main result of this paper asserts that \(\tilde N^ p\) is the variety defined by the determinants of the \((p+1)\times (p+1)\) minors of the discriminant matrix introduced earlier by the author and \textit{L. Solomon} [Nagoya Math. J. 109, 23-45 (1988; Zbl 0614.20032)]. This connection was observed for Coxeter groups by Yano and Sekiguchi.
