    Let \([T_ 1,T_ 2,...,T_ n]\) be a finite set of linear contractions of a Hilbert space H into itself. Let r be a mapping from the natural numbers N to \(\{\) 1,2,...,N\(\}\). \(S_ n=T_{r(n)}...T_{r(1)}\) is called the random product of \(T_ i's\). The author studies the behaviour of the random product of the compact contractions under the following conditions. (W): \(\| x_ n\| \leq 1\), \(\| Tx_ n\| \to 1\) implies \((I- T)x_ n\to 0\) weakly. (S): \(\| x_ n\| \leq 1\), \(\| Tx_ n\| \to 1\) implies \((I- T)x_ n\to 0\) strongly. (K): there exists a constant \(K>0\) such that for all x, \(\| (I- T)x\|^ 2\leq K(\| x\|^ 2-\| Tx\|^ 2).\) Noting the equivalence of all the above three conditions for a compact contraction of norm 1, the author proves the following. (i) If r assumes each value infinitely often, then \(S_ n\) converges uniformly to the projection Q on the subspace \(\cap^{n}_{i=1}[x|\) \(T_ ix=x].\) (ii) If \(S=S(T_ 1,...,T_ N)\) denotes the algebraic semigroup generated by the \(T_ i's\), then there exists a fixed positive constant K such that each element in S satisfies (K) with that K.
