This paper gives an explicit construction of a Hamiltonian system of PDEs satisfying the partition function of a cohomological field theory. When the underlying Frobenius manifold is semi-simple, the authors show that the hierarchy is polynomial. The partition functions here come from Gromov-Witten theory, and are generating functions that encode all of the Gromov-Witten invariants. The fact that evaluations on high enough powers of the \(\psi\) class vanish for dimensional reasons implies that the partition functions are what is known as tame. This notion of a tame partition function leads to the full hierarchy. The paper includes some long computations of the deformations of terms in the hierarchy corresponding to the Lie algebra of a twisted loop group action known as the Givental group. They check that the hierarchy of a point is polynomial. From this and the structure of the deformations they are able to conclude that more general tame hierarchies are polynomial.
