Let \(A\) be a commutative noetherian local ring, \(M\) and \(N\) finitely generated \(A\)-modules. In [\textit{L. L. Avramov} and \textit{R.-O. Buchweitz}, Invent. Math. 142, No. 2, 285--318 (2000; Zbl 0999.13008)] it is proved that if \(A\) is complete intersection then \[ \mathrm{Ext}_A^i(M,N)=0 \text{ for all } i\gg 0 \Rightarrow \mathrm{Ext}_A^i(N,M)=0 \text{ for all } i\gg 0, \] and this result was extended by \textit{C. Huneke} and \textit{D. A. Jorgensen} [Math. Scand. 93, No. 2, 161--184 (2003; Zbl 1062.13005)] to the case when \(A\) is a Gorenstein ring satisfying the Auslander AC condition. The paper under review begins with an attentive discussion of the proof of Huneke and Jorgensen, showing that the result holds even when \(N\) is not finitely generated (under the assumption that AC condition holds also for arbitrary modules \(N\), a condition still verified by complete intersection rings) and as a consequence, using Matlis duality, also when \(M\) is arbitrary and \(N\) of finite length. In a second part of the paper, the authors prove that this result remains valid when \(M\) is complete and \(N\) finitely generated.
