After the finding of a counterexample to a basic result in the theory of quaternionic slice regularity [\textit{X. Dou} and \textit{G. Ren}, ``Riemann slice-domains over quaternions. I'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1808.06994}], there has been an intense work in understanding the issue and finding possible solutions. This paper has to be set in such a context. At first, the authors review the counterexample explaining where the problem comes from: essentially the structure of the chosen domains is not enough and should be strengthened. Later they study functions that are locally slice regular but not globally, trying, in this way, to isolate the main properties they want to keep. Starting from this, the authors review many well-known results and theorems that hold for the local behavior of slice regular functions and then find suitable hypotheses to extend them to the global case.
